The rise of compact and efficient computing solutions has led to the popularity of devices like the Dell OptiPlex Micro Form Factor, Intel NUC, Asus, Lenovo ThinkCentre M series, Kamrui Mini PC, Geekom, Beelink, Hyundai, VivoMini, Zotac ZBOX – and many more manufacturers that have come and gone. What do these systems all have in common? They’re awesome but incredibly proprietary. From the chassis and motherboards to power supplies (usually external) and add-on cards – these systems are designed specifically by the manufacturers for a single purpose and can rarely be repaired on the hardware side. If you’re lucky, the memory and/or storage devices might be standard issues – but even that isn’t always the case. While these devices offer incredible performance in a small package, when they mess up they are usually gone. The best hope is that your data is not.
So what repairs can be done? Software-wise almost anything. Hardware-wise you’re looking at some limited options. First and most easy is the external power adapter – which can usually be replaced if that is the issue. Many of these Mini PCs use some sort of standard or slightly modified laptop adapter that fits into a standard DC jack. You can usually order a replacement or find a standard-issue adapter with the same specs on a site like eBay. Looking at the internal hardware – if you have a memory issue and they are standard SODIMMs (which they usually are) those are easy to find. If there’s a data drive issue you’re probably dealing with a 2.5″ rotational/SSD, NVME, or flash storage device. If they aren’t embedded or soldered onto the motherboard you can usually order a replacement. The easy stuff stops here though. Let’s explore some of the more nuanced issues faced by Mini PC users looking to repair their devices by looking at the issue and seeing what options you have.
Basics of Mini PC / Small Computer Troubleshooting
For every individual owning a compact PC, understanding rudimentary troubleshooting techniques is crucial. Before doing anything, if your mini PC turns on start by rebooting it. That can usually fix a lot of issues:
- Press the power button for a minimum of 5 seconds.
- Disconnect from power for about 30 seconds.
- Turn the Mini PC Back on
If re-booting doesn’t work, let’s start looking at possible problems and tips to try to resolve them:
1. The Mini PC Doesn’t Power On
Possible Solutions:
- Check the power cable for any signs of damage and ensure it’s securely plugged into both the PC and the power outlet.
- Try a different power outlet, preferably in a different room, to rule out potential outlet issues.
- Test or replace the power adapter and/or power supply. If it’s an external adapter swap for a new one. If it’s internal see if you can find a replacement.
- If you’ve had power interruptions recently check your power supply / adapter
- If you recently modified any of the hardware, undo your changes.
2. Display Issues or No Video Output
Possible Solutions:
- Ensure the HDMI/DisplayPort/Other video cable is properly connected to both the Mini PC and the monitor.
- Try using a different HDMI/DisplayPort cable.
- Reset the BIOS settings to default. Sometimes, incorrect settings can lead to display issues.
- Check your monitor or TV to make sure that it’s working properly on the input you’ve selected
3. Windows Doesn’t Boot or Frequent Crashes
Possible Solutions:
- Did you install any recent software or updates? If so, try to revert
- Boot the PC in Safe Mode and uninstall any recently added software.
- Use Windows’ built-in “System Restore” to revert to a previous stable state.
- Check for any available Windows or driver updates and install them.
4. Overheating Issues
Possible Solutions:
- Ensure the Mini PC is positioned in a well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
- Regularly clean out dust from the vents using compressed air.
- Check for any software or processes that may be causing excessive CPU usage and address them.
5. Slow Performance
Possible Solutions:
- Perform a disk cleanup using Windows’ built-in tools to free up space.
- Defragment the hard drive.
- Upgrade the RAM or storage for better performance, if the model allows.
- Run a Routine Clean-up: over time, redundant programs can clog and slow down your PC. Periodically audit and eliminate unused software. Use tools like the System Tray (Windows) or Dashboard (Mac) to identify and manage background applications.
- Monitor Storage Consumption Excessive storage usage can be a speed killer. Review your storage breakdown and offload data—be it large files or a gallery of photos—to the cloud, thereby freeing up space.
- Guard Against Viruses / Malware: A sluggish PC might be compromised by malware. Ensure you have reliable antivirus software and conduct regular scans. A detected threat can be isolated and removed, potentially restoring speed.
- Manage Start-up Applications Many applications are set to launch on start-up, potentially hindering boot time. Adjust settings to initiate these apps manually.
6. Connectivity Issues (Wi-Fi or Bluetooth)
Possible Solutions:
- Restart the Mini PC.
- Ensure the device drivers for Wi-Fi or Bluetooth are updated.
- Check the proximity to the router or the connected device. Sometimes, distance or obstacles can cause interference.
- Purge Your DNS Cache – The DNS cache enhances browsing by memorizing hostnames. However, an outdated or corrupt cache might hinder website access. Flushing the cache provides a swift resolution.
- Restart Your Internet Connection – Just as rebooting the computer can work wonders, so can resetting your internet connection. If facing connectivity issues, try unplugging the router or modem for 30 seconds before reconnecting.
- Contact Your ISP: If your internet issues don’t go away, it might be provider-related. Call them to see if there’s an outage in your area or other people are reporting the same issue.
7. Audio Output Problems
Possible Solutions:
- Check if the audio output device in the system settings is set correctly.
- Ensure the audio drivers are up-to-date.
- Test with a different speaker or headphone set to identify if the issue is with the Mini PC or the external device.
8. USB Ports Not Recognizing Devices
Possible Solutions:
- Reboot the Mini PC.
- Try a different USB port.
- Ensure the USB device drivers are updated.
9. BIOS-related Issues
Possible Solutions:
- Reset the BIOS to its default settings.
- Update the BIOS firmware from the official website of the manufacturer.
10. Operating System Installation Issues
Possible Solutions:
- Ensure you’re using a genuine and compatible version of the operating system.
- Check the installation media for any damages or corruptions.
- Attempt a fresh installation.
Conclusion
While a Mini PC is usually a reliable computing solution, occasional troubleshooting may be necessary. And if yours dies on you, you might need to buy an exact replacement in hopes to transplant parts over to troubleshoot, repair, or at least salvage your data.
One thing you’ll notice with a lot of these Mini PC lines and projects is that they tend to get cancelled or discontinued for whatever reason. This isn’t a great situation when you’re looking for replacement parts. With this guide in hand, hopefully resolving some of the more common issues becomes a more manageable task. Always ensure you have regular data backups, and when in doubt, consider consulting with a professional or the manufacturer’s support team for assistance.

Not so impressed with these unfamiliar named mini PC’s. They all start to look similar and spec’d the same. Support is dreadfully missing from these makers. They offer minimal support some don’t even post good recovery options or drivers. Windows for some odd reason can’t detect many drivers either. If you do a clean install be prepared to search for drivers. Have not had to do that in years. I bought two types one died in under 6 months the other still going but fan drives me insane running all the time. I would avoid as a primary PC and buy something from a good known brand.
