Apple, the renowned tech giant, is gearing up to launch its next generation of devices, with the spotlight centered on its premium iPhone 15 models. Anticipated to introduce groundbreaking changes, the new iPhone 15 series is reportedly going to be different from its predecessors in more ways than one.
For many years, Apple has steadfastly utilized its unique Lightning charger for iPhones, a trend set in motion since 2012. However, the winds of change are blowing, and the iPhone 15 along with its sibling, the iPhone 15 Plus, are set to embrace a USB-C charging compatibility, as per a Bloomberg report.
This move to incorporate USB-C charging is designed to align with the EU’s regulatory requirements. With the common charger law approved by ministers from EU member states last year, all electronic devices, including mobile phones and tablets, will need to support USB-C charging by 2024. This essentially renders Apple’s Lightning charger obsolete in certain markets.
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, acknowledged this regulatory change at The Wall Street Journal Tech Live conference last October. He conceded, “Obviously we’ll have to comply.”
USB-C charging is a standard feature in most contemporary gadgets, from Android smartphones and tablets to a majority of Apple’s iPads and even a few Amazon Kindle eReaders. This universal compatibility implies that a single charger would suffice for all your devices, adding a layer of convenience for users.
Apart from the charging adaptation, another significant upgrade is reported for the Pro models in the iPhone 15 series. Instead of the conventional stainless steel, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are anticipated to flaunt titanium edges. This tweak in design materials is expected to reduce the weight of these high-end phones, enhancing the user experience.
Bloomberg’s report also suggested a potential price hike for the luxurious iPhone Pros. Since 2019, Apple’s high-end iPhone Pro has been marketed with a starting price tag of $999 in the U.S, while its larger-screen counterpart, the Max model, has an initial price of $1,099. With the prospective enhancements in the pipeline for the iPhone 15 Pro, a higher price tag may be on the cards.
