Google Pixel 2XL Screen Replacement Steps
Google Pixel 2XL Screen Replacement Steps

Google’s Pixel 2 XL, known for its high-quality camera and seamless performance, may still fall prey to screen damages, whether from accidental drops or daily wear and tear. A damaged screen hinders the optimal user experience, making a timely replacement crucial.

Proceed from step to step with caution on the Pixel 2XL because while this phone is easy to work on, it’s also extremely easy to break something on it that will require an entirely new motherboard. The steps below are designed for you to replace the display and digitizer on a Google Pixel 2 XL assuming you have the correct replacement assembly already. This guide will navigate you through the various methods and considerations for a successful Pixel 2 XL screen replacement.

As with any cell phone repair, start by making sure the phone is COMPLETELY turned off.

Tools / Equipment Needed

In addition to standard cell-phone repair equipment, you will need the following tools to replace the screen on your Pixel 2XL:

  • Replacement Screen For The Pixel 2 XL
  • Double Sided Tape (2mm)
  • Picks, Pry/Opening Tool, Spudger
  • Suction Handle
  • Tweezers
  • Scissors

Procedure for Opening the Device

Step 1: Place the Pixel 2XL On A Heat Pad for 1-3 minutes (Optional)

This step is optional because while it will aid in separating the adhesive that holds the screen, on the Pixel 2XL it’s not entirely necessary. You should be able to get the job done with just the procedure in Step 2. If you don’t have a heat pad, jump straight to Step 2. Also, as a word of caution, if your screen is so cracked that the glass is sharp at points and can cut you – make sure to tape over it to prevent injury.

Step 2: Attach The Suction Cup & Initial Opening

Attach the suction cup as close to the SIM slot edge as possible and slide an opening tool/pry tool along the edge to cut the adhesive. Insert picks along the way to aid with this and keep the phone screen separated. Slowly work around the frame but stay clear of the curved edge. You can again apply heat (optional) at this point to further loosen some adhesive but it’s not absolutely necessary. Be careful to never insert a tool or adhesive too deep into the phone or you risk cutting a ribbon. The adhesive is very close to the outside edge so just the tip of the pick needs to be pushed in.

Step 3: Lift the Screen Up

Once the adhesive is cut around the phone carefully lift the screen from right to left (like a book) and gently lay it down in a way that doesn’t risk damage to the ribbon cables that connect to the motherboard (there will be two). One of these ribbons is the digitizer cable connector cover and the other is the display connector cover. You may see some tape over one or both of the connectors. Carefully lift the two connectors from their sockets and, when free, remove the damaged display.

Step 4: Transfer Needed Components

At this point you could attach your new screen if it came with everything the old one did, but it’s likely that you will need to transfer some components over. The most common things you’ll be transferring include the speaker grilles, front-facing camera gasket, etc. Move each piece over carefully so that the new screen assembly matches the old one. Make sure everything is firmly in place and aligned properly before installing the new screen.

Step 5: Install The New Screen

Peel off any protective coverings and the adhesive strips on the new screen and and carefully line up the front-facing camera gasket to make sure it installs in the exact spot it needs to. Now you will essentially follow the steps you took above in reverse order to attach the new screen to the motherboard via the two clips, apply adhesives (if not already attached to the new screen) and make sure the seal on the device is secure. You can test the screen once it’s re-assembled by booting up your phone. The phone may go through some initial diagnostic checks if it detects the new screen. When those are completed, you’ll want to run your own checks to make sure everything is working properly – especially checking the front camera to make sure it’s functioning correctly.

Other Considerations

Understanding the Significance of the Screen

The screen of the Pixel 2 XL is fundamental to the user interface, affecting the visual display and touch responsiveness. Replacing a damaged screen is essential to maintain the phone’s functionality and aesthetic.

Reasons for Screen Replacement

  1. Enhanced Visibility: Repairing cracks and scratches restores the screen’s clarity.
  2. Improved Touch Responsiveness: A new screen ensures precise and smooth touch interactions.
  3. Maintained Resale Value: A flawless screen is pivotal in maintaining the device’s value.

Options for Pixel 2 XL Screen Replacement

1. Professional Repair Services:

Relying on professionals guarantees a high-quality and precise replacement but can be costly.

2. DIY Screen Replacement Kits:

For those adept with repairs, DIY kits are available, requiring careful attention and accuracy.

3. Warranty or Insurance Claims:

Explore replacement options under the device’s warranty or insurance policy, if available.

Steps for Professional Screen Replacement

  1. Find a Reliable Repair Service: Locate a reputable service center or a certified technician for the screen replacement.
  2. Obtain a Cost and Time Estimate: Before initiating the repair, acquire information on the cost and expected duration of the replacement.
  3. Secure Your Data: Back up your device to prevent any data loss during the repair process.
  4. Inspect the Replacement: Post-repair, scrutinize the new screen for any defects or issues.

DIY Screen Replacement Procedure

When utilizing a DIY kit, adhere strictly to the provided instructions, employ the right tools, and execute the replacement with utmost precision to avoid damaging the device further.

Precautions and Recommendations

  • Embarking on a DIY repair can be intricate and may potentially void the warranty, so it’s essential to consider the implications.
  • Always ensure data is backed up prior to any repair activity.
  • Employ protective accessories like screen guards and durable cases to shield the screen from future damages.
  • Specific to the Google Pixel 2XL model – be extra cautious around the bottom connections. If you don’t attach them in the correct way the parts that control the bottom speaker can get damaged and there is no recovery from that. You would have to replace the motherboard (if possible) or buy an entirely new phone at that point.

While the Pixel 2 XL is a robust device, screen damages are not uncommon and necessitate prompt attention.
